(IC) Skilla Baby returns with "GYSM," or "get you some money," out now via Geffen Records. Built on an expertly flipped, long-lost '90s R&B sample, the new single is essentially a lushly produced love song to stacking cash.
"GYSM" leaps across eras, hitting Jesse Powell's 1996 cut "You" with the pitched-up chipmunk soul treatment before sliding into a modern soundscape of booming 808s, snapping hi-hats, atmospheric keys, and echoing adlibs. Skilla then provides a masterclass in hustling - laying out his bona fides, revelling in his music success, and giving advice while serving up a hypnotic hook meant to motivate the next generation of strivers: "Young n*gga, go get you some money."
The sleek track unites Skilla with an A-1 array of producers including Courtlin Jabrae (GloRilla, Ciara), Rance (Kendrick Lamar, Ella Mai), and Kid Hazel (21 Savage, Coi Leray), alongside Warryn Campbell, MyGuyMars, Slimm, and Dash. Meanwhile, the music video comes courtesy of KZA (Ice Spice, BigXthaPlug), who brings the money-making grind to life. Woken by his alarm, Skilla gets ready to clock in, but rather than hit the studio, he progresses through different scenes in different everyday professions: construction worker, delivery driver, office employee, janitor. With humor sprinkled throughout, the clip portrays the star as pure, uncut American hustle.
"GYSM" plays like the come-down to March's "West to East" featuring 42 Dugg, a booming, streetwise ode to resilience and dominance. That uncompromising cut cemented the creative camaraderie between the two Motor City greats, who linked up earlier this year on Dugg's celebratory single, "Thick One." This summer, Skilla will also support select dates on the 4 The Trenches tour, an all-Detroit lineup co-headlined by Dugg and Babyface Ray.
