(BT PR) Rita Wilson has released her sixth studio album, Sound of a Woman - out today listen here. Co-produced by Rita and nine-time GRAMMY-winning producer Dave Cobb (Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell), the album was recorded at Nashville's historic RCA Studio in live, intimate sessions. Equal parts unfiltered memoir and nuanced observation of the world around her, Sound of a Woman is a searingly honest collection that traces the arc of a woman's life.
On the eve of Mother's Day, Rita also released a new music video for the track "Your Mother". Directed by Steven Sebring (Patti Smith), the video showcases Rita singing the moving ode to mothers while archival footage of her own family plays on screen behind her.
Reflecting on the song, Rita explains, "Losing my mother eleven years ago made me realize there are so many questions I wish I'd asked her about her life while she was still here. I find myself remembering all the things she taught me and then passing them on to my own children- so even though she's gone now, she's still just as present. It's made me want to speak more honestly with my kids now that they've grown, they can get to know the parts of me you can only talk about when you're all adults."
In support of the album's launch, Rita will perform on NBC's Today this morning. Earlier this week, she appeared at New York City's 92nd Street Y for a conversation with Demi Moore, as well performed an intimate arrangement of the title track and "Your Mother."
An up-close meditation on stripping away the extraneous and reclaiming your true voice, Sound of a Woman offers a revelatory excavation of the self. With the album, Rita aims to create space for people of all generations and genders to join in the collective lifting of voices that often go unheard or unspoken. "Everyone has a story to tell-all of us, including men-and we each carry our struggles," she says. "My hope is that this album gives insight into the many phases that women experience over the course of their lives and empowers them to look more closely at the woman sitting next to them, realizing there may be a lot more going on with her internally than what we see outwardly."
Highlights on the album include the title track, the empowering ballad "Michelangelo", and "Jury of One," a love letter to women navigating the pressures of doing it all, accompanied by a striking music video filmed at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York.
Rita will embark on a U.S. tour this June, with dates at various City Winery venues beginning June 11 in Boston. She also recently announced her November UK / EU tour, including a headline performance at EFG London Jazz Festival, alongside headline shows in Glasgow, Berlin, Hamburg and Amsterdam.
