() Emerging West Virginia songwriter and piano bard Brad Goodall has released his latest track "River Water" today. Over smooth guitars and shuffling drums, the soft rock tune pulls listeners right into summertime submerged in the Ohio river, bringing anyone with fond memories of a childhood by the river back home.
Premiered with the Bluegrass Situation and directed by Sam Adkins, the music video accompanying the track perfectly visualizes the sun-soaked memories Goodall revisits in the track, pairing easy listening with stunning visuals of West Virginia.
Reflecting on the track, Goodall said "River Water is a bittersweet point of view from my upbringing in West Virginia - an empty town on my summer birthday, searching for spirits that weren't there in my version of Appalachia. Finding peace where I didn't expect it, home. It's not a billboard advertisement, it's an honest reflection. A roots rock homage to Gerry Rafferty, the soft rock I grew up on, and am inspired by."
"River Water" marks the first release from Goodall's upcoming album Hometown, releasing May 1st.
Entering the music scene with his Huntington, WV indie rock band Ona, where he'd spent most of his twenties touring and recording, Goodall first established himself as a vivid storyteller with his 2022 solo debut Made In America, which boasted satirical character studies of sad, desperate men in the vein of Randy Newman and Warren Zevon. Where that album unfolded like a collection of biting short stories, his latest Hometown plays out like an autobiography. Across 9 audacious and personal songs, he trades humor for heart, sarcasm for earnestness, and solo-perfectionism for full-band collaboration. Out May 1st, this project is joyful and reflective with tracks detailing love, marriage, grappling with where you're from, and looking back at a youth spent in touring bands figuring it all out. Instead of hiding behind jokes and character-driven lyrics, it's open and vulnerable music where Goodall is effortlessly himself, and a document of coming to terms with where he's from and coming into his own as a songwriter.
