Singled Out: Miss the Heart's 'Know Me Better'

Victoria, BC alternative pop-rock duo Miss the Heart just released their new anthem "Know Me Better", and to celebrate we asked them to tell us about the track. Here is the story:

"Know Me Better" is the soundtrack to that moment when you finally realize, oh, I see what you're doing now. It's when the pieces start falling into place and you realize someone you trusted has been playing you. There's this strange mix of anger, hurt and relief that comes with finally seeing a situation clearly.

The song sounds like it's about a romantic relationship, but it's really a universal song about dealing with narcissistic people. It was inspired by more than one relationship in my life, and while the situations were different, the pattern was often the same: you trust someone, don't recognize what's happening at first, and eventually realize you've been manipulated or taken advantage of.

For me, the most important part is what happens once you finally see the situation for what it is. You stop trying to make that person understand you, take responsibility or give you the validation you were looking for. Instead, you start choosing yourself, and this is what makes the song so empowering for me.

The writing process was pretty chaotic, which felt fun and fitting. Michael actually wrote one of the verses at 2 a.m. the night before we went into the studio. We showed up the next day and read the lyrics for the first time, and he nailed it. Guess he can be pretty good at channeling his feminine rage too.

One of my favourite memories from recording at Echoplant Studios was doing the gang vocals for the "You narcissist, get over it" part. Our producer Ryan Worsley, Michael, an intern and I were all crowded around one microphone, shouting it together. It was loud, chaotic and felt absolutely ridiculous, but it was so much fun.

Sonically, "Know Me Better" sits right in the middle of the two sides of Miss the Heart. It has catchy, pop-forward melodies that explode into heavy guitars, with a lot of contrast between the softer moments and the more aggressive ones. It's the kind of song you can blast in your car and sing along to, but also scream at the top of your lungs when you need to let something out. I think there's something really relatable about having a song that gives you permission to feel that anger, frustration and release without having to hold it back.

At the end of the day, "Know Me Better" is about taking your power back. Sometimes you realize you don't need someone's approval or understanding anymore. You know who you are, you know what happened, and you don't need them to validate it.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
