Singled Out: Jont's Another World

Nova Scotia-based singer-songwriter Jont just followed the release of his "Walk Right Through" album with his new single "Another World." To celebrate we asked him to tell us about the track. Here is the story:

The opening lines of this song are an image that I imagine is like someone falling from a great height, maybe like a skydiver, falling and falling down - to emphasize the strength and inevitability and all the events that have been leading up to this person falling in love...."Oh I've been falling in love, for so long, just falling and falling down from so high above you...". And in a lot of ways this song has been falling and falling for so long to finally to get to this moment when the full band recording is now being released to the world.

It first started coming through when I was in Los Angeles at the beginning of my youthful quest to be a rock star. I was listening to The Cure's "Head on the Door" album a lot, and a Gorecki Symphony.... And something of both started coming through in this poppy yet yearningly romantic track. My housemate Jesse Rogg (who would later produce Sam Sparro's hit Black & Gold) recorded the first demo of it in his makeshift home studio. Flying back to the UK I worked on the lyrics on one of those glossy bags that you're given in case you need to be sick. I struck up a conversation with my neighbour and I think I gave them the bag with lyrics on it as a present. And enamoured with the song as an acoustic piece I recorded a version on 2007's album "Supernatural". 8 years later I started playing it electric with my band at the time in 4/4. We tried recording a version but it didn't feel any good. I tried recording it on 2020's Thank You for the Medicine album - that didn't work either. But still the song kept coming back wanting to be sung. Perhaps because it is so much about love, such a pure crystallisation of the love experience, complete with a break up in the bridge and then a getting back together by the final chorus.... Like an on-off relationship that finally settles into a harmonious place, there's a happy ending to this tale!

On moving to Cape Breton, famous for its Celtic folk music, it felt natural to play the song in 3/4 and suddenly the emotion in the song came through more. And the big sing along chorus outro came through for the first time. Another housemate, ECMA award winning songwriter Jonathan Andrews - who plays a bunch of guitar on these new tracks, came through with the perfect tone and part and my long-time collaborator George Hoyle found the perfect synth sounds and finally, unexpectedly after all these years, Another World had made it to the finish line.
