Singled Out: Little Falls Trophy's Let It Go

Little Falls Trophy just released their new single "Let It Go", and to celebrate we asked Doug Albregts to tell us about the track, which will be included on the group's forthcoming album. Here is the story:

"Let It Go" came from thinking about how much energy we spend trying to control things that may never happen. We prepare for every possible outcome, carry old conversations forward, and sometimes allow one uncomfortable moment to occupy far more space than it deserves. I've certainly done that in my own life. The strange part is that we can become so accustomed to carrying that weight that it begins to feel necessary-as if worrying about something is the same as doing something about it.

The song is really about recognizing the moment when holding on stops being useful. Letting go can sound passive, but I think it actually requires a decision. You have to decide that a disappointment, a mistake, or someone else's opinion is no longer going to determine how you move through the day. And then you usually have to make that same decision again the next morning. That is why the chorus repeats itself. The words are uncomplicated, but doing what they ask is not.

Musically, I wanted the song to have forward motion because the subject isn't resignation-it's release. Ross Petersen helped bring that sense of momentum into the production while still leaving room for the vocal and the central idea to remain exposed. I recorded the song at Hapgood Studios, and Gregory Hyde's backing vocals added another human voice to the refrain, almost as if the reminder were being passed from one person to another. Alex Aldi's mix and Joe Lambert's mastering gave the finished track the clarity and lift I had hoped for.

For me, "Let It Go" is less about achieving some permanent state of peace and more about refusing to keep feeding what has already taken enough from you. Some things deserve to be understood, and some deserve to be put down. Learning the difference may be one of the hardest-and most freeing-things we do.
