Singled Out: Pep and Perk's Rainy Days

Michael ("Smidi") Smith and Scott Krippayne), the duo who wrote the Emmy-nominated Paw Patrol theme song, are gearing up to release their new album, "It's Cool To Be A Kid," under the banner of Pep and Perk on June 12th. To celebrate we asked them to tell us about the album's new single "Rainy Days". Here is the story:

The lyrics for "Rainy Days" were written during the dark and dreary season in the PNW. (Yes, we had plenty of time to work on it.) Inspiration was easy to find... just by looking outside. The music track was one that had been sitting around for a while, and we liked the contrast of a bad weather lyric against an upbeat stomp track. The chorus came together first, just thinking about how to flip a rainy day on its head and make it fun.

For the verses, we recalled what a bummer rainy days could be when we were kids and wanted to offer a different perspective. We thought about listing some things you can do inside during the rain - but decided on going with outdoor fun. Like just get out there, embrace getting drenched, and go for it! With everything we do, we're trying to make the song engaging for kids - but also something that parents, and grown-ups in general, can enjoy too. So, for this it was... feel your feelings... be disappointed and bummed... (we can't change the weather) and then say, "What do we want to do now?" Let's find a way to have a blast in the rain!

Once we had a couple verses and a chorus, we liked where things were headed, but we felt like the song was still missing something. We reached out to Peabod and asked if he wanted to jump in on the tune. He wrote and sang his part over the original verse chords, and then we decided to change up the chords a little, so it felt more like a bridge. And just like that we had a song! So, the next time it's raining where you are, get out there, count some raindrops, and go dancing!

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
