NYC-based jazz pop artist Luisa Wilson just released her new single "WTF?" and accounted her new EP "LOVE ON MARS?". To celebrate we asked her to tell us about the new song. Here is the story:
When I wrote "WTF?" I was lying in bed, drinking a glass of wine, my face was puffy after a good but all too familiar cry. And my first thought when I picked up my guitar was literally just: "What the f***? Again? Seriously?'
I found myself in so many situations where I was at odds with a fantasy I fell so deeply in love with, the fantasy being loving someone who actually loves me back (crazy notion I know.) But it just was not happening, and I was clinging onto it so tightly that I could feel the possibility get farther and farther away as my expectations and my standards got lower and lower.
I lost all of my energy to it, and a relationship became something I was grasping at rather than letting happen naturally, rather than being alone, but being sure in myself and in what I deserve. And so, I went through it again and again, and each new experience seemed to sting more than the last. Don't people say that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? Yea in that case I was starting to go insane. And so, I wrote this song.
I was in the middle of a "situation" with a person I grew to love, but deep down I knew that he couldn't meet me there. But I stayed, and my feelings grew while his remained stagnant. It felt like death by a million paper cuts; a slow and painful ending for me, a natural and comfortable limbo for him. I'm thinking back trying to remember if anything particularly horrible happened to get me to write this song, but I think it just came out of a moment of clarity with myself. I was so frustrated. I felt like I kept learning the same lesson over and over; dating the same guy in different fonts OVER and OVER. But I was still clinging onto that hope that I entered every relationship with, even though hope was the main reason I kept ending up heartbroken. Nevertheless, I pride myself off being a romantic, however pessimistic I've become as a result. I don't want to ever regret loving a person, and I hope I never do. But damn, they make it hard sometimes.
"WTF?" was so fun to write, even though I was going through the wringer, and that's what my favorite part about this song is. It's fun. It's making light of a sad situation; It's remaining hopeful yet again. Writing it equated to actively pulling myself out of a hole & back into sunshine, rainbows, and a very very scary (but sometimes very fun) dating pool. It felt like loosening my grip and accepting the fact that maybe I'm meant to feel hurt right now. And I'm probably going to be hurt in even worse ways down the line. But at least I know now that I can handle it, and that I'm prepared to laugh and dance in the face of any sh*tty man that comes my way from here on out.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
