Edmonton, AB singer-songwriter Ellie Heath recently released the new single "Too Old (For This Sh*t)," and to celebrate we asked Ellie to tell us about the track. Here is the story:
"Too Old (For This Sh*t)" was written on the very last day of a songwriting retreat in Peterborough with Hawksley Workman and Tristan Konkle. I was scheduled to leave on the bus at 2 PM, so we really only had about half a day to come up with a new idea. We debated whether we even wanted to write anything at all that morning. Sometimes on a retreat you reach that point where you feel like you've said everything you had to say.
But then Hawksley pulled up a sick beat and Tristan offered a playful, whistly intro. Suddenly, we created a vibe that felt playful and fun. The track instantly felt cool with a bit of mischief, like it had a personality of its own. Once that groove started, the song kind of wrote itself.
As a songwriter who came to the music scene a little later in life, I started thinking about age and what it means to be "too old." In the entertainment industry especially, there's such a strong focus on youth.
Emerging artists are often imagined as people fresh out of school, in their early twenties, just beginning to cut their teeth on life. A lot of songs are written about that stage of life too; falling in love for the first time, leaving home, starting a life from scratch.
But what about the people who are a little farther along?
I wanted to write a song for the folks who still feel curious and creative, but who are also carrying the fact that they're not 22 anymore.
Personally, I often feel like a kid in adult skin. Like I somehow arrived at adulthood without ever quite understanding what adulthood was supposed to look like. I know where I am, but sometimes I'm not entirely sure how I got here or where I'm going next.
So we started riffing on that tension: feeling like you might be "too old for this sh*t," while at the exact same time still feeling completely alive, playful and full of ideas.
What came out of that session was a song that feels cheeky and self-aware, but also direct and honest. It's about standing at that in-between place in life where you're questioning yourself a little... while also realizing you're far from done.
In fact, you might just be getting started.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
