Marshall Dane recently released his deeply personal new single "Somebody Somewhere," and to celebrate we asked him to tell us about the story behind the track. Here is the story:
"except for one small set of words that I wanted to sing over and over and over...
because they reminded me of John." - Marshall Dane
I lost my best friend when I was 16 years old. We played guitar together. We sang together. We wrote songs together. We even learned how to drive together - cruising up and down Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, Canada. Then one day, February 24th, 1991... he was gone.
All I had left were the memories - a short video my dad once took of him walking, and a photo his mom gave me after the funeral.
That photo became everything.
I protected it with my life. I put it in an old frame just so it wouldn't get damaged. It followed me everywhere - every apartment, every studio setup, every desk I ever worked at.
It was a constant reminder of the guy who used to call me "Shakespeare," and the person who first inspired me to become a writer, singer, and an artist who wanted to matter.
Fast forward to 2021.
I was living near Airport Road and Highway 9. One winter night in December, a buddy of mine from Erin, Ontario came over to write.
Nothing really stuck that night - except for one small set of words that I wanted to sing over and over and over...
because they reminded me of John.
And then the chorus appeared:
Somebody somewhere
is holding a picture
Of somebody they used to know
And the love that remains
In that old worn-out frame
Is a love that will never let go.
That night Matt went home, and we never wrote together again. He eventually left the music business.
But those words stayed with me.
I never let them go.
In 2023 I met Rosanne Baker Thornley, and the rest is really history.
I knew right away she was something special. After our first successful project together, I brought her this idea - these words I'd been carrying since 2021.
We wrote.
And rewrote.
And kept writing...
Until every line, every intention, supported that chorus - lyrics that became a testament to the lasting power of love.
Once the song fully took shape, we brought it into the studio.
And a lot of beautiful things were born from that recording - the biggest one being freedom.
This song reminded me that every recording can be a journey: a space for creativity, curiosity, exploration, and possibility.
I hope you enjoy the process of listening to it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
Listen for:
The three repeated openings that slowly build with harmonies
The funky verse harmonies
The unusual pre-chorus sections
The spontaneous "rollin', rollin'" vocal (a joke in the studio that somehow stuck)
The cinematic outro vocals
The lift going into the third chorus
The electric guitars
The bass lines
And the fun drums
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen and watch for yourself below and learn more here
